A Day in the Life of a Army-Enlisted
Today's Army strives to instill the quality of leadership in its troops to produce "an Army of one," as its advertisements proclaim. This new focus on independence and individual initiative seeks to appeal to today's core military recruit: you. Soldiers have to keep in mind the long months they spend away from home. If you're in High School looking for cash towards college, the Army could be a big help. The Army provides health and dental plans, and a thirty-day paid vacation. There are over 200 different ways to serve.
Paying Your Dues
Joining the Army can be a challenge and feel overwhelming, but it doesn’t have to be if you know what to expect. Following the seven-step process (outlined on goarmy.com/army101/instep.htm) for enlisting can help make your transition into An Army of One that much easier:
1) Talk to a recruiter. To find a recruiter closest to you, go to goarmy.com.
2) Take the Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery (ASVAB) test. You can get a copy from your local recruiter.
3) Report to the Military Entrance Processing Station (MEPS). Here you will take the ASVAB test, get a physical, find out where you will be stationed for Basic Training, and be sworn in as a Soldier in the U.S. Army.
4) Select a job. A job in the military is called a MOS (Military Occupational Specialty).
5) Participate in Basic Training.
6) Start Advanced Individual Training (AIT). AIT is where you get the specific training that applies to your MOS.
7) Find out where you will be stationed
Present and Future
Since the time of Cain and Abel, human beings have fought one another, and it does not appear that we will stop anytime soon. Organized military branches in different countries have been omnipresent for thousands of years. But if you're going to fight, the U.S. Army is one of the better places to be. A brief, very incomplete history of the American Army would have to include the semi-organized force of colonists in the French and Indian War. The colonists formed an army as a tool to free themselves from England during the Revolutionary War. The Army defeated Mexico in the era of manifest destiny, and in 1861, the Federal Army fought the southern Confederate Army's attempt to secede from the Union in what became the Civil War, the only extended conflict in American history wherein Americans have fought and killed fellow Americans. Spain was dealt defeat in 1898. Germany was defeated by America and her allies not once but twice in the two World Wars. The latter half of the twentieth century saw the Army challenged by forces in Korea and Vietnam; although these conflicts were technically police actions and not wars (Congress never declared war on either of these nations), they played an important part in American military history. Although the most publicized military action in recent memory was Operation Desert Storm in 1991, the U.S. Army is constantly engaged in lower-profile peacekeeping missions throughout the world.
Quality of Life
PRESENT AND FUTURE
In order to join the Army, enlisted personnel must sign an enlistment contract, which in most cases involves a commitment to 8 years of service. Depending on the terms of the contract, 2 to 6 years are spent on active duty and the rest are spent in the Army Reserves. The enlistment contract obligates the Army to provide the agreed-upon job, rank, pay, cash bonuses for enlistment in certain occupations, medical and other benefits, occupational training, and continuing education. In exchange, enlisted personnel must serve satisfactorily for the specified period of time.
FIVE YEARS OUT
Promotions are in store for talented individuals who have put sufficient time and effort into their work. The pay grade generally goes up for enlisted troops who have been in the Service for this long (barring major regulations infractions).
TEN YEARS OUT
While most enlistees don’t stay in the Army for this long, if one has shown enough leadership ability to be appointed as an officer, then an extended stay in the Army is an attractive option. Pay, authority and responsibility all increase with your rank.
