Academics

Education at the University of St. Francis centers on "lab-based and research-based assignments" and within this environment, "hands-on learning" opportunities abound. Ask a student from any department how they feel about it, and they'll probably be enthusiastic, like a science student who calls their department "one of the greatest strengths of the school" and values the emphasis on "research rather than lecture." You'll also hear about the advantages of "Business Research classes where we deal directly with clients," how the "robust nursing program" offers labs that are "quite exciting...learning how to truly care for someone is something St. Francis does well," or how the College of Education has "very vigorous and quality programs for undergrads." Another education student agrees, saying "There are no free grades, [and] each semester has challenged me academically and will make me a better person and future educator." Look to the professors for some credit in that regard: "Every teacher I have had has made themselves available to students, placing a high priority on their success, trust, and mental and physical health. The instructors are committed to getting to know the student on a personal level and supporting them to challenge themselves socially as well as academically."

Student Body

The community at the University of St. Francis provides a "welcoming and friendly environment. The people who are here, from students to staff and faculty, all work to ensure everyone feels safe and accepted." One student describes their peers as "truly made of a different caliber than the rest. We care about helping our community and motivating those around us to achieve their full potential." Another student points out that "the student body at the University of St. Francis is very diverse and supportive of one another. There are many events for students to meet people....It is easy to get close to people." Nervous first-year students can rest easy knowing that "literally any student will be able to find their niche here with other students," says a self-described "former social outcast." Says one student: "If you want an intimate learning experience, this is the place."

Campus Life

The quad is beautiful and has many shady and sunny spots for relaxing and taking time in nature and it's also common "to see people in lounge areas enjoying meals, conversing with friends, working on homework, or playing games such as table tennis or billiards." Motherhouse is a favorite on-campus hang out, featuring a "fully functional fireplace to keep students warm in the cold...of a Chicagoland winter." Students point to "intramurals, athletic events, social activities organized by the clubs on campus, music concerts, [and] coffee talks" as favorite social activities. One student notes that their preferred organizations include the "Recreation Club, Student Activities Board, Scientific Research Club, Latino Honors Society, Asian American Student Association, and Unidos Vamos Alcanzar." The Duns SCOTUS Honors Program is known to host "bonfires and trivia nights" and the History Club offers "opportunities to serve the community, learn about local and state history, and get to know other history buffs." All told, students describe enjoying a multitude of academic and social clubs available on campus.
