With computers and technology permeating more of our lives and the economy, there is high demand for highly trained software engineers, cybersecurity experts, and skilled professionals in the field of computing. Considering how a computer science master’s degree can set you up for a solid, well-paying career? Two experts from the School of Computing at Sacred Heart University, Dr. Tolga Kaya and Director Domenick Pinto, share their knowledge of the field, including trends, skills needed for success, and potential career paths.
Q: How would you describe the field of computer science today? What should students look for in a master’s program?
A: Professionals in the field of computing engage in goal-oriented activities involving computer systems—creating and harnessing these systems to the enrichment of society. Computing is an integral part of our world, and employers always seek applicants with advanced degrees in computing disciplines.
Graduate programs in computing should include both the theoretical framework and hands-on learning to give students a well-rounded background encompassing both theory and practice. Programs help students prepare for careers in coding, cyber security, game design and many other fields. Students learn to analyze computing problems associated with their discipline and to design and implement solutions.
Q: How are programs like Sacred Heart University combining theoretical framework and hands-on learning in computer science?
A: The School of Computing at Sacred Heart University offers two full master’s degree programs—in cyber security and in computer science and IT. It also offers nine certificate programs. In all of these advanced degree programs, students complete hands-on projects. Students also have the opportunity for research and to work with an outside company to develop an app.
For example, five SHU graduate students are currently working on a major app to be used by the food industry as early as September 2018. Students are exposed to adjuncts with real-world experience, as well as research specialists and renowned professors.
“Come in with an open mind. Don’t be afraid of the field even if your tech skills are not advanced. Be able to communicate well, think outside the box and problem solve. A good mathematical foundation is an extremely important ingredient. Also, find industry-related projects to work with during your studies, and seek programs that provide that opportunity, faculty members advise.” —Dominick Pinto, M.A., M.S., Director, Sacred Heart University School of Computing
Q: What are the latest trends in the field, and what skills are essential for a recipient of computer science master’s degree?
A: Trends in the computing field include a continuous and fully emerging emphasis on all aspects of security, database management, networking, cloud computing, apps for mobile devices, gaming and machine learning. In computer engineering, prediction is a big focus, as well as sensing technologies for health monitoring.
The most essential skill needed to be successful in this field is problem-solving. More specifically, students need a foundation in programming, design and development of various apps; exposure to database and networking; and web expertise. Our programs reinforce all of these essential skills. Communication skills are important as well, so SHU offers classes with service learning components that enable students to improve their communication skills.
Great candidates for these degrees tend to be those with strong foundations in logic and math.
Q: What are the range of career options for a candidate with a computer science master’s degree?
A: Career prospects are vast and promising for those with a graduate degree in the computing field. They can look forward to a career in software development, for instance. The Bureau of Labor Statistics reports that software developers earned a median income of $102,280 in 2016. Graduates can also become database administrators or computer hardware engineers—also with hefty salaries. Those with more of an information technology inclination may prefer to become IT consultants, cloud architects, or data modelers—all with six-figure earning potential. Those with a graduate degree in cyber security can become information security analysts, forensic experts or security architects.
The options are virtually endless. Post-graduate certificates, too, offer immense opportunity in many computing sub-fields. In whatever sub-field one enters, employers tend to look for core competencies, strong analytical skills and the ability to work independently.
Q: What are Sacred Heart University alumni doing with their computer science degree?
A: Our alumni from the School of Computing at Sacred Heart University have attained jobs at companies such as GE, Disney, Yahoo, Google and Amazon, among others. The School is also applying for ABET accreditation and has become a center of excellence for cyber security. There is even a motion capture lab for game design students.
Faculty members are proud of the School’s research specialists in algorithms, ethics, forensics, leadership, AI, and Machine Learning—and have introduced computer engineering curriculum and faculty this past fall.
